Something I found interesting is this home has two levels on the left side and only one on the right. In the show the 2 story part was on the right and the 1 story was on the left...

  • Los Angeles Theatre - 1931, mellowzulu wrote 16 years ago:
The premiere of Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights" was held here. This was the most luxurious movie palace built by S. Charles Lee. He spent $1.2 million dollars on this palace (a princely sum back then.) Sometimes, in cheaper films, when you see a character in a European palace, it's being filmed in this theater lobby. It was built with a special circus tent-like room for children to play in while their parents watched the movie. It also has a special mechanism so that the movie could be remotely viewed while standing in the smoking lounge downstairs.

The picture above, taken from the LA Public Library photo collection, shows the former occupant -- the Abraham and Anne Lehr Craftsman house -- of this property. According to LAPL: "The 2nd floor had 6 bedrooms and 2 baths arranged around the big, open stairwell. The dining room was at left on the first floor; behind it were a pantry, kitchen, and servants' rooms. A spacious hall receded from the front door, holding the stairs to the floor above and ending in a lovely sitting room with leaded glass windows. The living room was to the right of the hall; behind it was a library and a covered patio area. The backyard was both lawn and garden. A detached garage with rooms above was at the end of the driveway; a wooden turntable allowed cars to be positioned so they could face the street. When the property was sold, the home was torn down to make room for an office, but the new owners wisely left the front entrance area, the steps and plantings as they were. The spirit of the house was personified in the large glass bowl of lemon leaves kept on a table in the hall. Anne "Mom" Lehr was the founder of the Hollywood Guild and Canteen, a haven for servicemen during WWII."
