The street just outside the Alto Nido is where Humphrey Bogart would sneak off with Lauren Bacall and fool around in a car, when they were secretly dating. (As described in her autobiography)

Photo #2: "The new bond-selling slogan out Hollywood way is being displayed on the steps of the Hollywood post office every day this week. In a gaily bedecked red, white and blue booth, lovely girls are helping Uncle Sam in the bond and stamp drive under the slogan, "Rally Round the Girls---Buy U.S. Bonds in Defense of our Blondes". Pictured here are some of the lovelies from one of Hollywood's new musical shows, who took over the day's sales, and according to Assistant Hollywood Superintendent J. J. Formeller, the girls are doing a terrific job. Not counting the customers, the girls are (left to right) Jane Hale; Lorraine Ilfrey; Lucille Lambert; and Mary Tolleson. Photo dated: March 11, 1942." • Hayward Hotel - 1905, desu wrote 16 years ago:
Photo #2 shows the original Ralphs Bros. Grocers (now known simply as Ralphs) store which was located on this spot, founded in 1873. The Los Angeles Public Library notes: "Exterior view of Ralphs Bros. Grocers, located on the southwest corner of 6th and Spring Streets in 1886. This was known as "Georgetown Corner." The photo was taken shortly after this two-story brick building was built. Next door on Spring Street is the New York Bakery. George A. Ralphs is leaning on a stack of boxes, and Walter B. Ralphs is in shirt sleeves (He died in 1954 at age 99). A horse-and-carriage is parked in the unpaved street. The original address of Ralphs was 501-503 South Spring, with New York Bakery at 505. Under the new street numbering system adopted about 1890, the address for Ralphs changed to 601-603, and for the Bakery 605 South Spring. Later the Hayward Hotel was built in this location."

  • First Los Angeles Aqueduct Cascades, desu wrote 16 years ago:
The photo above shows an automobile passing in front of the first cascades in 1915. The road on which it is travelling is likely the predecessor to today's I-5 and Highway 99.
