If any of the entry lanes has a stop sign, it’s not a modern roundabout. If you could play a game of football in the center landscaped area, it’s not a modern roundabout. If the circular roadway has a stop sign, yield sign or signal, it’s not a modern roundabout. If you don’t have to slow down to enter it, it’s not a modern roundabout. If you have to change lanes in the circular roadway to exit, it’s not a modern roundabout. If you can easily drive faster than 20 mph in the circular roadway, it’s not a modern roundabout. If it has a park for pedestrians, or a building, in the middle, it’s not a modern roundabout. Many people confuse other and older styles of circular intersections with modern roundabouts. East coast rotaries, large multi-lane traffic circles (Arc D’Triomphe, Dupont Circle), and small neighborhood traffic circles are not modern roundabouts. If you want to see the difference between a traffic circle, a rotary (UK roundabout) and a modern roundabout (UK continental roundabout), go to http://tinyurl.com/kstate-RAB to see pictures.

  • The Dream Center, Bruce (guest) wrote 9 years ago:
I was born at Queen of Angels on Christmas night 1949, my parents making the drive across pre-freeway Los Angeles on surface streets from the Eastmont area of East LA. I also had surgery there in 1973. Missing from the film list but one with good interior and exterior views is the 1978 romantic comedy "House Calls" with Walter Mattau, Glenda Jackson, and Art Carney.
  • BPOE building, Richard (guest) wrote 9 years ago:
This building was built in 1927 by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Santa Monica Lodge 906. To this day, big letters that say BPOE are on the side and front of the building in addition to being carved in stone over the front door. But the depression hit the Elks hard and by 1933 they could no longer afford the building. It was sold and converted into a 78 unit apartment building, called the Carlton Apartments. It is now a Landmarked property, well maintained at 3001 S. Main St, corner of Pier Ave. in the Ocean park district of Santa Monica.

  • Adohr Farms Dairy, Bruce Kimmel (guest) wrote 9 years ago:
I don't know why everyone says La Cienega and Sawyer - while it may have run to Sawyer on the south, the front of it was on the corner of 18th and La Cienega - I grew up three blocks from there. I don't think any of it ran as far west as Holt because I lived on Sherbourne around the corner from Holt. I played in their delivery truck graveyard daily.
  • Hayward Hotel - 1905, Craig Najarian (guest) wrote 9 years ago:
I remember the Hayward Hotel and nearby Clifton's Cafeteria. My father ran the dry-cleaning shop on the first floor on Sixth and Spring. There were service men every-were dressed in tan or blue. I assume army and navy. Downtown Los Angeles was clean then....1947 and 48. The place was bustling and lively. I was five years old my brother was ten. The shop was a money-pit, but my dad looked for the easy way to fortune, decided to sell drugs and got hooked on heroin and fornicated with a bitch by the name of Hazel. My mom, pregnant at the time would not tolerate adultery, scooped us kids up and took us to Detroit, grandma and grandpa's house on the Super-Chief. We actually changed trains in Chicago. Detroit is another story. I had a good memory for a kid.
  • Site of the arrest and beating of Rodney King , guest (guest) wrote 9 years ago:
This area was mainly hispanic and white. King grew up in Alta-Dena...slightly poor but not as bad where he got pulled over. South Pasadena and Alta-Dena was sort of a black enclave. Panorama City would be slightly black and you would have to go to El Monte perhaps to find significant number of blacks. In between those two not so much.
  • River Phoenix's Place of Death, Cal (guest) wrote 9 years ago:
Were you a friend or were you there? The autopsy says River didn't snort anything. Did John mean to hurt him and did River know what he was taking? I still struggle that River left. It's surreal even almost 23 years. He has been gone as long as he lived here. God have mercy.
