    I don't have the story, but it is my understanding that this is now part of Griffith Park. I visited recently and climbed the peak. At the trailhead beyond Wonder View Dr, there is a monument that credits among others, Hugh Hefner and Steven Spielberg.

    While this stage may have occasionally been used by the show, the bulk of the interiors were shot at Desilu Culver City (now Culver Studios). This studio was adjacent to the "Forty Acres" back lot, where the town of Mayberry stood. Keeping the interiors and exteriors close together reduced the time (and cost) of transporting cast and crew.
