Even though it's technically in Culver City, this is the largest sound stage in Hollywood. Was built as a silent stage in the 1920s and then converted to sound sometime in 1930.

This used to be the visual effects stage when MGM owned the lot. It was on this very stage that the miniature cyclone was filmed for THE WIZARD OF OZ.

River and his party -- girlfriend Samantha Mathis and siblings Joaquin and Rain -- arrived at the club just after midnight. They parked in the rear and entered through the side entrance on Larrabee Street, right next to Turner's Liquor. They had their hands stamped with little green stars as proof of entry. They went to the upstairs club where Johnny Depp and the band P (Depp, Flea, Al Jourgensen, Gibby Haynes) were performing on stage. River brought his guitar along as he was to join in a jam session on stage along with pal John Frusciante (formerly of the Chili Peppers at the time). Before being seated in a corner booth near the back of the club (by Johnny Depp's private booth with the "Don't F*** With It" plaque), the group stood by the bar and ordered drinks. At this time, River chatted with friends Flea and Frusciante. A bit later, while the band was playing on stage, River approached Flea (playing bass on stage) and asked him about playing with them. FLEA: "I got some good news and some bad news. The good news is: I love you. The bad news: You aren't gonna be able to play with us. There's already too many people on stage. Sorry, Riv." Or, something to that effect. Now, up to this point, River was clean. He made a point to stay off drugs so he could jam with his friends. Now, with the news he couldn't play, River became upset and immediately set out to find some drugs. Shortly before 1 am, River disappeared into the bathroom with friend John Frusciante who supplied him with some high-grade Persian brown heroin. "It'll make you feel fabulous." River went into a stall, cut a line with a credit card, and snorted it. Almost immediately he began to shake and convulse in front of the sink. He vomited in the sink and on himself. Somebody splashed water on his face and gave him a Valium. River stumbled out and slumped in the booth where Samantha, Joaquin, and Rain were seated. "I can't breathe". He passed out briefly and slid under the table. When he came to, he asked to be taken outside. The rest depending on which account of the story you read, the published account, or Samantha's account. The published account has Sam and Joaquin hauling River out when he collapses. I don't believe that story. I trust Samantha's account. Samantha sees John Frusciante helping River through the club to the stage door. As they passed the stage, the band was playing a song called "Michael Stipe" which ironically included River's name in the lyrics. River did not look at Johnny Depp and say "I just took a speedball. I'm gonna die man." Depp didn't even recognize him. They weren't friends. Anyhoo, Frusciante helps River out the stage door which opens onto the Sunset Strip. Samantha follows them. She was scared as River collapsed on the sidewalk. Frusciante kept telling her "He's fine. He's fine." She stood about ten feet away and lit a cigarette. Meanwhile, Rain and Joaquin were inside and called their friends Dickie and Abby Rude back at the Hotel Nikko where River was staying during filming of DARK BLOOD. After River collapsed, I believe Frusciante got scared and bolted. Flea eventually learned what was going on with his friend and went outside. Joaquin and Rain soon followed. I think you know the rest. River's last words: "No paparazzi. I want anonymity."
