A grand mansion once stood on this site that belonged to Claudia Urlau Dillion (successful in real estate) and her husband John Webb Dillion (successful actor). They lived across the street or next door to Humphrey Bogart. The home was built with steel and granite and was so strong that when developers bulldozed the neighborhood they had to use dynamite to bring it down. When it was being built they used teams of mules to bring the granite out of the mountains. It had hand carved solid oak doors and woodwork and travertine tile throughout the home. It was 3 levels with quarters for maids and butlers on the lower/ basement level, living space on the main level and bedrooms and a large oak hall on the 3rd level. They were relatives of mine and I am looking for photos and information about their home, careers, friends and lives. Please share if you have any!

There have been bicycle endurance climb contests up this 20% grade road. In the 1980s the Mountain GAte Century ride was held here. Only a few of the riders finished the 100 miles which meant 100 round-trips. at a 20% grade it meant they has ascended 20 vertical miles.
  • Chatsworth Nature Preserve and Reservoir (site), Phil (guest) wrote 10 years ago:
Legend has it that the Chatsworth Reservoir was drained as a precautionary measure due to the 1972 earthquake. Yet, the fact remains that it was drained in 1969 to make way for a Diversion Tunnel to, as reports say..."Improve the Quality of Water" Other reports created from a Nuclear and Rocket Research Facility within the reservoir watershed, somewhat back this up. One report is the Preliminary Safety Evaluation of the SRE or Sodium Reactor Experiment, a Atomic/Nuclear Research Reactor located within a structure known as the Burro Flats Fault, connecting Runkle Canyon and the Chatsworth Reservoir. Before the reactor was built, concerns were that, in case of Emergency, the reservoir water would be rerouted from other reservoirs...for an indefinite period of time.

  • Rocketdyne site, Chatsworth Native (guest) wrote 11 years ago:
This is the former site of the Canoga plant/facility originally built by North American Aviation (Rocketdyne Division); later acquired via mergers by Rockwell and Boeing. It remained Rocketdyne's headquarters through those mergers, until 2014. The original NAA parcel included the Best Buy land, Westfield Topanga, and what is now the MTA Orange Line parking lot.

I visited here twice to explore the Andy Griffith Show connection. A thrill to be able to walk down the path to the fishing hole! Sure could have used this map on the first visit, no one around there seemed to know the exact location, but we did find it in a short time. Great place to visit for a TAGS fan.

The pronunciation is either Los "FEE-liss" or "FEE-liz"-- because the emphasis is generally on the first syllable, it is NOT the correct Spanish pronunciation of the word
